HAAHE Presents "EMERGENCY POWER CHALLENGES in 2010 and BEYOND ".

Many hospitals have yet to deal with The Joint Commission’s Sentinel Event Alert 37.  The 2010 revisions of NFPA 110 and 111 have arrived.  This presentation, led by the NFPA 110/111 Chairman and a leading authority on emergency power in hospitals, is an overview of the topics that are likely to have the most impact on healthcare as we move forward – emergency power Gap Analyses, power system Vulnerability Analyses, power system Risk Assessments, emergency power maintenance and operational reliability, contingency planning, changes to NFPA 110 and 111, NEC® requirements for Critical Operations Power Systems, and potential changes to NFPA 99’s emergency power requirements.

About the Speaker:

David Stymiest is a nationally recognized speaker, trainer and author.  He is presently a Senior Consultant at Smith Seckman Reid, Inc. (SSR) responsible for Day Two Compliance, TJC Sentinel Event Alert 37 Compliance, Emergency Management Compliance, Continuous Compliance Cycle consulting, electrical power systems consulting, facilities engineering and management consulting for SSR’s healthcare clients.  Before joining SSR in June 2000, he was Senior Electrical Engineer for more than 10 years for Massachusetts General Hospital and the other hospitals of Boston-based Partners HealthCare System.

David has 37 years intensive professional experience in facilities and electrical engineering for health care, institutional, industrial, commercial, civil works, transportation, and electrical utility projects.  He has spent almost half of his career as an Owner and hospital engineer, and half his career as a consulting engineer.  He is acknowledged as a forward-thinking leading industry expert in the management, operation, testing, and application of emergency power systems in health care facilities.

He is an AHA Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM), a Fellow of ASHE (FASHE), an AEE Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and Green Building Engineer (GBE), and a Registered Professional Engineer in three states.

David is presently the Chairman of the NFPA Technical Committee on Emergency Power Supplies, which has responsibility for NFPA 110 and NFPA 111.

David is a member of the 2010 ASHE Advocacy Committee.  David was a member of the 2008 and 2009 ASHE Education Committees.  David was also the Chapter Chairman for Chapter 4 – Electrical Power Systems for Delivering Patient Care for the 2007 revision of the IEEE White Book, IEEE 602.  He was also an active member of the Power Distribution Workgroup of ASHE’s NFPA 99 Revision Committee, charged by ASHE with recommending changes to NFPA 99. 

He has a BS degree (1972) and a Master of Engineering degree (1973) in Electric Power Engineering from RPI, and a Certificate of Special Studies in Administration and Management (1984) from Harvard University Extension.

David has spoken at 14 national ASHE conferences and national conferences for several other organizations including NFPA, Shriners Hospitals for Children, Environment of Care Leader’s EC Summit, the US Government’s Indian Health Service, and HCD.09; and over 40 state conferences; written and updated 2 ASHE Technical Documents / Management Monographs, and written 13 Health Facilities Management Magazine articles.  He has also conducted several national audio conferences and webinars.  He also co-edited the 1200-page McGraw-Hill Facilities Engineering and Management Handbook for Commercial, Industrial, and Institutional Buildings, which was published in 2001.  David has also written 2 articles for publication in London, UK for the International Federation of Hospital Engineering (IFHE).  These 2 IFHE articles were “Managing Hospital Emergency Power Programs” in 2004 and “Finding Emergency Power System Vulnerabilities in Healthcare Facilities” in 2008.  He has also written articles for Maintenance Solutions Magazine, Healthcare Circuit News and Consulting-Specifying Engineer.

About the Organization:

HAAHE is a non-profit group organized specifically for the benefit of the Healthcare Facilities Management team. Membership is focused on Hospital Facilities and Safety Management staff.  In addition, Engineering Consultants, Contractors, Vendors, and Architects whose primary function is to provide consulting, design services, and products to the hospital engineering environment are welcomed.

The purpose of HAAHE is to provide a forum for continued improvement of hospital engineering in the greater Houston area. The venue for improvement will be through education, sharing of experiences between members, and presentations by experts in their respective field on a bi-monthly basis.  If you are already a HAAHE member, please get involved by attending our meetings every other month.  If you are not yet a member, you may join by completing a membership application at the next meeting.  Membership for hospital employees is only $50 per year / individual and meeting attendance is free.
